I found this is the safest resting position for the phone. I have dropped my phone 3 times from table and even counter top and and not a scratch on the phone. I keep it in my pocket (both jacket and pant pockets). Remember the touch screen is receded about 1/4 of an inch, so its impossible for it to touch the surface its on. Head phones ([.].) are amazing with iphone since you can listen to music and take calls (with builtin microphone in the headset). The phone is always protected whether on the table surface, in your pocket or your hand. I always keep my phone in my left pocket, while keys and loose change always stays in my right pocket. Camera works fine.
The home button is easy to push through the rubber case and always works without a hassle. The silence button is also well retreated with even more space, about 1/2, in so there is no chance that you would ever flip that little switch by accident in your pocket or moving the phone around. My wife's hardcase, although thinner, doesn't fit because of width.Side note:I also use my iphone's bluetooth headsets and a remote transmitter/receive ([.].) which hooks up to my hifi system. As a matter of fact, it makes the touch operations much easier then on my wifes phone which uses a see-through all enclosed case.
This protects the screen while exposing the thick rubber with tire-like grooves on the back. The rubber protrudes out and above the screen almost a 1/4 of an inch, which is usually ample protection for the screen. I have tried a couple of other cases that completely enclosed the iphone, or pull out from a case pouch, and nothing compared. Doesn't interfere with Wifi or bluetooth functionality. It is the toughest thing around and really protects your iphone. Same for the power button. At home I usually place the phone with touch screen facing down.
Because of the completely non-slip, touch and rubber/tire like surface, they have never dropped the phone. It has survived several drops on the hardwood floor and survived with no damage. I have been using this case for over a year and I love it. I must say, I love this case. It really protects the phone. I would hate to imagine what would happen if I dropped the phone like that, without this case or some other case that may or may not provide the necessary bounce.
Of course, I always take the phone back from them before we leave the car. All works great. The case doesn't have any hard surfaces to protect the touch screen except for the included thin film protector, but I have not found that to be a problem at all. I use it constantly with Sony Dock clock radio ([.].) and it fits very snugly but fine. Especially around kids. Now, my kids have been playing the iphone like a PSP or Nintedo DS - all the time in the car. So I don't unnecessarily put them and the phone in a position to be likely dropped. All the buttons and ports are easily accessible.
Lastly for the thickness of this case, you might think it would create a problem for using with some docking stations/players. I am in geek heaven.
Luckily the phone was still secure in the clip and fell on the skin, phone is still good to go. This Tough Skin is "beefy". It definitely is a conversation piece when people notice my phone. The clip at the swivel point could not take the force exerted to it and the clip came apart. I only wish this had other colors. I would have given this a higher score, but the clip that comes with it is best described as ehh.
In the back of my mind, I would always worry about the clip, but never worried about the skin. I am confident when i drop it, (happened twice with while clipped to pants), the skin has soften the blow to my iphone. I would "snap" the swivel part of clip back on. 2 times my phone was clipped to my pants in the front pocket. Both times I was passing a tight space to walk, and the phone got caught. If you have no problem carrying the phone instead of on the clip, I would recommend this skin highly.
Oh and last thing, the skin surely does attract lint and dust in the beginning, but now it is not as prevelant.
After getting my iPhone 3GS, I spent several hours over the course of a few days scouring the 'net for all the available cases, reading as many reviews as I could. Simply stated, this case is the most protective open-face iPhone case I've come across. I have used the Speck Products Tough Skin Case for over two months now and have never once thought about using a different case.It fits the 3GS well, feels good in my hand; yes it is bulkier than most cases, yes it can make it more difficult to slide the phone out of tight pockets (especially if you keep other stuff in your pocket with it)., yes it will attract lint (though after being broken in for a while, it won't attract nearly as much as when it was new), and of very minor concern it does trap more heat inside the iPhone. but NONE of these drawbacks have negated the plain and simple fact that this case does what I want it to do: Gives me peace of mind while protecting my phone. If you want an open-face case and protection is your primary concern, just buy this darn thing already.
I use my iPhone on the golf course for GPS and I wanted something that was tough. Very good case. It is on the large side but that was what I wanted. The only issue with this case is if you keep the iphone in your pocket sometimes with jeans it's a little difficult to get out quickly. If something happened to this case I would replace it with another just like it.
If you have any plans to shoot your iPhone out of a cannon into a jagged concrete wall.then wrap it in the Speck Toughskin case. I only wish the folks at Speck would broaden their product line to include protection for other fragile devices.I bet they could even come up with a wicked watch. On a different note. I found the best deal by far at Amazon. With their outstanding customer service, it was a no brainer for me.
